Frequently asked question for local organisers, volunteers, problem proposers and others

How can I become a local organiser?

There is no fee to become or serve as a local organiser. The call for local organisers is published on the website (usually in autumn). Contact us at emc@mnm.hr. First-time applicants are asked to provide brief background information confirming suitability to work with minors (e.g. teaching experience, involvement in mathematics competitions, institutional affiliation). If selected, you must complete the follow-up form by the deadline. More information can be found on the Become a local organiser page.

What are the main responsibilities of a local organiser?

You organise the competition locally (date and venue within the nine-day December interval), inform and register participants, supervise the contest in person, collect solutions, mark them according to the official schemes, translate awarded parts into English (Latin script), and submit scans + marking by the given deadline. You also forward temporary results, receive and (if justified) forward appeals, and distribute final results and certificates. The competition must remain free for participants.

When and where can the competition be held?

Within the nine-day interval chosen by the Organisational Jury (usually mid-December). You choose the exact date and time that works best locally. The competition must be held in person under proper supervision.

What happens if marking, translations or materials are incomplete?

Missing translations of awarded solutions or incomplete marking in the official template lead to 0 points for the affected parts (which may sometimes be corrected during appeals). Significant or systematic deficiencies may result in loss of local organiser status for at least one future edition. AI-only marking is not accepted.

How do temporary results and appeals work?

After Central Jury review, you receive temporary results and must forward them to participants. Appeals are submitted (by participants or you) through the official channel. You decide whether an appeal is justified and, if so, forward it to the Central Jury by the deadline (at least 7 days after you receive the temporary results).

Can I propose problems?

Yes. We need original problems. Send a .tex file prepared in the official template to emc@mnm.hr (see the Problem proposers page for more information). Problems must remain confidential until the end of that year’s contest period. Unselected problems stay in the pool for future editions unless you ask us to remove them, and we don’t publish them.

Can I join the Central Jury?

Yes. The Central Jury selects problems, prepares marking schemes, answers questions during the contest period and reviews local marking for consistency. A call is published each year (usually together with the problem-proposal deadline). Apply via the form or email provided in the announcement.

What data protection obligations do I have as a local organiser?

You must have a valid legal basis for collecting and processing participants’ personal data and for transferring the necessary information (name, category, country/local organiser code, scans of solutions) to MNM. You are also responsible for providing participants with the relevant privacy information. Full details are in the Personal Data Protection Notice and the Rules for local organisers.

Who should I contact?
