What is the European Mathematical Cup (EMC)?
The EMC is an international mathematics competition for high-school students (and exceptional elementary-school students), held every December. It is organised by the Croatian association Young Gifted Mathematicians “Marin Getaldić” in cooperation with local organisers around the world. The aim is to give students the opportunity to solve interesting and challenging problems and to prepare for other international competitions.
Participation is completely free. Charging students for taking part is strictly prohibited.
What kind of problems are there? Is the syllabus the same as the IMO?
The problems are similar in style and difficulty to those of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). There are four problems (algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory). Junior problems are usually a bit more elementary, but still require serious mathematical thinking. The required knowledge is the same as for the IMO. You will find problems, solutions and results from all previous editions on the History page.
Can I participate without a local organiser?
No. You can only participate through a local organiser who runs the competition at your location. Without a local organiser, participation is not possible. You can check the current list of local organisers on the Local organisers this year page.
If there is no local organiser in your area, try to find someone who might be willing to organise it (a mathematics teacher, university student, mathematics club, etc.). We are rarely able to help find a local organiser – this is something you need to arrange locally. Feel free to use the Become a local organiser page to help them understand their role. Once you have found someone interested, ask them to contact us at emc@mnm.hr.
How do I get my temporary results and appeal?
Temporary results are sent to you by your local organiser. If you believe a solution has been marked incorrectly, you must submit your appeal through your local organiser (not directly to us). The local organiser decides whether to forward the appeal to the Central Jury. The deadline for appeals is at least 7 days after the temporary results are received. After the results are published on the website, they are final.
Is there a certificate? How do I receive my certificate?
Certificates of participation (and any prize certificates) are distributed by your local organiser after the final results are published. Please contact your local organiser for your certificate.
Who should I contact with questions?
Your local organiser is your main point of contact. For more serious issues (for example, suspected rule violations, problems with the local organiser…), you may also write to the Organisational Jury at emc@mnm.hr.
